Online Training Course

The RPBA Online Corse Course provides an introduction to the RPBA approach. Participants will be familiarized with RPBA methodology, its key aspects and core principles, and the dynamics of the process. Modules address the overall approach, as well as the key actions and dynamics in each step of the RPBA process.

It offers participants an interactive and expanded version of the guidance available in the jointly developed Recovery and Peacebuilding Assessments: Practical Note to Assessment and Planning published in November 2016. The course is available to experts from the World Bank Group, United Nations, European Union, and partner institutions, and is available in English, Spanish, French and Arabic.

Training Courses

The RPBA team is committed to growing the capacity to conduct RPBAs within Joint Declaration partners’ staff, and beyond. To this end, in addition to the online introductory course, the team has conducts a series of on-location trainings to build both capacity in general, and specifically in countries and regions where RPBAs are imminent. These trainings are aimed at both international development experts, and national government counterparts.

Country Specific Trainings

Country Specific trainings are conducted as an RPBA becomes imminent. These trainings bring together staff from the Joint Declaration partners, and from any other multilateral and bilateral organizations that may be participant in the RPBA. These trainings build on the online course, and are typically held over 1-2 days. They offer participants the opportunity to deepen their understanding of RPBAs, and discuss country-specific issues regarding the RPBA with RPBA experts. The trainings also introduce participants to the organizational structure of partner organizations as relevant to the RPBA process, and serve as a platform for early coordination among the organizations involved in the RPBA.

Trainings for National Counterparts

Trainings for national counterparts are conducted to prepare for a potential RPBA. They are specific to each country, and highlight the ways in which existing national systems would benefit from an RPBA process, and how the assessment process can be used to galvanize peacebuilding.

Participants benefit from discussing country-specific issues with RPBA experts, and discussions focus on how learnings from previous experiences can be applied to each country’s particular context. The trainings also orient national counterparts to the approach to RPBAs of the international organizations.

Trainings to Date

The Virtual Secretariat has held four trainings across the world, training a total of 121 experts from across the three organizations and beyond. You can learn about each of these trainings here.

The objectives of these trainings have been to:

  • Forge a Community of Practice across the international organizations
  • Connect tripartite colleagues from the HQ, and the regions in anticipation of an RPBA;
  • Build a common understanding of the RPBA approach among the participants;
  • Provide participants expertise on how to conduct an RPBA, with a focus on clarifying roles and responsibilities at each step of the RPBA process.

The charts below offer some high-level insights into the organizational and country affiliations of the trainees, and highlight the diversity of the participants.

The 121 staff trained so far have come from 9 major organizations. Just over half of the participants came from the United Nations, and represented a broad swath of agencies within the United Nations’ system. The trainees work in 33 different locations, with about three quarters working in the regions, and the remaining quarter working in their organization’s headquarters.
